The whole reason to buy a two-channel dash cam is the second channel, and the second channel is where the category economizes. Read the titles carefully and you will find that most 4K dash cams are a 4K front camera and a 1080p rear one — the headline number describes half the product.
That matters more than it sounds, because the single most common scenario people buy a dash cam for is being hit from behind. The camera pointed at that is the one running at a quarter of the front camera's resolution, at night, through a rear window.

The rear camera's real problem is not resolution
It is the glass. A rear camera shoots through a heated rear window with defroster elements running across it, often tinted, frequently dirty, and in the dark. Resolution helps at the margin; what actually determines whether you get a plate is sensor sensitivity and the camera's handling of the headlights pointed directly into it.
We cannot tell you which of these handles that best, because that requires footage comparison in controlled lighting and we do not do that. What we can tell you is which ones publish a sensor good enough to make it plausible, and which ones publish nothing.
Cable routing is the part people underestimate
A rear camera needs a cable from the windshield to the tailgate. On most cars that is a run under the headliner, down the C-pillar and through a rubber grommet into the tailgate. It is not difficult, it is fiddly, and it is the reason many two-channel cameras end up installed as one-channel cameras. Budget an hour, or budget for a shop.
