The short answer

Look at the rear resolution, not the front. Most cameras marketed as 4K pair a 4K front with a 1080p rear, and the rear is the camera that films the vehicle that hits you. Two on this page do better — one at 2.5K rear, one claiming 4K at both ends.

The whole reason to buy a two-channel dash cam is the second channel, and the second channel is where the category economizes. Read the titles carefully and you will find that most 4K dash cams are a 4K front camera and a 1080p rear one — the headline number describes half the product.

That matters more than it sounds, because the single most common scenario people buy a dash cam for is being hit from behind. The camera pointed at that is the one running at a quarter of the front camera's resolution, at night, through a rear window.

STARVIS 2 is Sony's low-light sensor line and it is the specification that actually decides whether a night plate is readable. Resolution without sensor quality gives you a very sharp picture of nothing.

A supercapacitor instead of a lithium battery is the right choice for a device that lives on a windshield. Batteries swell and fail in summer heat; capacitors tolerate it.

Parking mode on a G-sensor trigger records on impact. It does not record the person who keyed your door and walked away — that needs a motion or time-lapse mode and, usually, a hardwire kit.

Rear resolution is where this category cuts corners, and the rear camera is the one that films the car that rear-ends you. 2.5K is a real upgrade over 1080p for reading a plate at night.

-22°F matters if you park outside in a northern winter. A camera that will not boot at -10°F is not recording your morning commute.

ADAS on a $100 dash cam is a lane-departure beep, not a driver aid. Treat it as noise you can switch off.

170° is the sweet spot for a front camera. Wider captures more lanes and distorts plates at the edges; narrower misses the car that came in from the side.

Vibration-triggered parking monitoring wakes on a knock. It is better than nothing and much worse than continuous recording.

A windshield in direct summer sun goes well past 140°F. A camera rated to 158°F has margin; one with no published rating is an unknown you are mounting to glass.

Time-lapse parking mode is the one that catches a hit-and-run. It records continuously at a low frame rate rather than waiting for an impact that may never register.

The rear camera's real problem is not resolution

It is the glass. A rear camera shoots through a heated rear window with defroster elements running across it, often tinted, frequently dirty, and in the dark. Resolution helps at the margin; what actually determines whether you get a plate is sensor sensitivity and the camera's handling of the headlights pointed directly into it.

We cannot tell you which of these handles that best, because that requires footage comparison in controlled lighting and we do not do that. What we can tell you is which ones publish a sensor good enough to make it plausible, and which ones publish nothing.

Cable routing is the part people underestimate

A rear camera needs a cable from the windshield to the tailgate. On most cars that is a run under the headliner, down the C-pillar and through a rubber grommet into the tailgate. It is not difficult, it is fiddly, and it is the reason many two-channel cameras end up installed as one-channel cameras. Budget an hour, or budget for a shop.

Is a rear dash cam worth it?

Being rear-ended is one of the most common scenarios a dash cam is bought for, and a front camera records none of it. The second channel is the point of a two-channel system — which makes it worth checking that the rear camera is not running at a quarter of the front's resolution.

What rear resolution should I look for?

Better than 1080p if you can get it, because the rear camera works through tinted, heated, often dirty glass with headlights pointed straight into it. Two cameras on this page go beyond 1080p at the rear and it is the clearest upgrade in the category.

How hard is it to install the rear camera?

Fiddly rather than difficult. The cable runs under the headliner, down a pillar and through a rubber grommet into the tailgate. Allow an hour if you are doing it yourself, or add it to the cost of a professional install.

Which of these has the best night footage?

We do not know, and we are not going to guess. Judging that properly requires comparing real footage across lighting conditions, which we do not do. What we can tell you is which cameras publish a named low-light sensor, and that is what the ranking reflects.
