4K has become the price of entry in this category rather than a differentiator. Nearly everything sold above the bargain tier records 3840x2160 at the front, which means the number on the box has stopped telling you anything useful about which camera to buy.
What still varies enormously, between cameras that all say 4K, is everything behind the lens.
Why the sensor matters more than the resolution
Resolution sets the ceiling on how much detail can be captured. The sensor decides how much of that ceiling you reach in the conditions that matter — which, for a dash cam, means at night, with headlights pointed into the lens, at speed.
A 4K image from a mediocre sensor is a very sharp picture of an unreadable plate. A 1440P image from a good low-light sensor can be the one that identifies a vehicle. That is why the first thing to look for on any 4K listing is whether a sensor is named at all.

STARVIS 2 is Sony's low-light sensor line and it is the specification that actually decides whether a night plate is readable. Resolution without sensor quality gives you a very sharp picture of nothing.
A supercapacitor instead of a lithium battery is the right choice for a device that lives on a windshield. Batteries swell and fail in summer heat; capacitors tolerate it.
Parking mode on a G-sensor trigger records on impact. It does not record the person who keyed your door and walked away — that needs a motion or time-lapse mode and, usually, a hardwire kit.

-22°F matters if you park outside in a northern winter. A camera that will not boot at -10°F is not recording your morning commute.

Time-lapse parking mode is the one that catches a hit-and-run. It records continuously at a low frame rate rather than waiting for an impact that may never register.

The rear channel is where 4K quietly stops
Most cameras marketed as 4K pair a 4K front with a 1080P rear. The headline number describes half the product, and it is the half pointed away from the most common at-fault scenario a private driver encounters — being hit from behind.
Two cameras on this page do better than 1080P at the rear. If the money has to go somewhere beyond the front camera, that is where we would put it.
What 4K costs you in storage
Supercapacitor, without exception
At 4K the camera works harder and runs warmer, on the same windshield, in the same summer. A lithium battery in that position swells and degrades; a supercapacitor tolerates it and only needs to hold enough charge to close the current video file when power cuts.
Two cameras here publish the temperature range their capacitor is rated for — one from 5°F to 158°F, one from -22°F to 158°F. A windshield in direct summer sun goes well past 140°F, so that upper figure is not theoretical, and the lower one decides whether the camera boots on a northern winter morning.
Where the money should go, in order
- A named low-light sensor. This is the single biggest determinant of whether footage is usable when you need it.
- Rear resolution above 1080P, because the rear camera films the vehicle most likely to hit you.
- A supercapacitor with a published temperature range.
- Wi-Fi band, if you want to retrieve clips without pulling the card.
- Front resolution beyond 4K — which does not exist yet, and is why the list stops here.
