The one-hand test
Before buying any front-cabin organizer, imagine retrieving the thing you intend to keep in it with your right hand, without looking, while steering with your left. If that requires a lid, a zip, or two fingers pinching something out of a narrow slot, it will not happen at 60 mph. Open-topped side caddies pass this test; zipped pouches do not.
Depth is a trap here
A deep front-cabin pocket collects things and then hides them, because you cannot see into it from a seated driving position. Anything under about three inches deep stays visible and usable; anything deeper becomes the same problem as the console bin you were trying to fix.
