What went wrong
The magnetic mount market has quietly split in two and the listings do not make it obvious.
One half is MagSafe mounts. These hold a ring of magnets that Apple builds into every iPhone from the 12 onward, and into MagSafe cases. They are elegant because the phone needs no modification — but they only work on hardware that has the ring.
The other half is the older approach: the mount is a magnet, and it ships with thin steel plates you stick to the phone or slide inside the case. The magnet holds the plate. This works with literally any phone, including every Android, every iPhone before the 12, tablets and GPS units.

This is how magnetic mounting works for a phone with no MagSafe ring: you stick a thin steel plate to the back of the phone or inside the case, and the mount holds the plate. It is not a downgrade so much as a different mechanism, and it works with literally any phone.
The PE films in the box are the detail worth noticing. They go between the adhesive and the phone so the plate can be removed later without taking the finish with it.
No rated hold weight is published, which is the same gap the MagSafe mounts on this site mostly have. Judge it on plate size instead — a larger round plate holds better than a small one.

A rotating base on a magnetic mount is worth more than it is on a clamp mount, because with a magnet you can also just rotate the phone on the magnet itself. Having both means you can set the mount angle once and then flip the phone between portrait and landscape freely.
The mini-tablet claim is worth treating carefully. A tablet on a single vent blade is a lot of hanging weight on a thin plastic louver, and no rated hold weight is published.

Being written around Android and GPS units rather than iPhones is genuinely useful information: it tells you the plates and magnet are sized for devices that have no built-in magnet ring to work with.

The two-connector design is the right architecture for anyone who drives two different cars, because the magnet head and the plate on your phone stay the same and only the base changes.
The windshield option deserves the same caution it gets everywhere else on this site: several states restrict what may be attached to the glass and where. A vent connector is in the same box, and it removes the question entirely.

What the plate costs you, honestly
- It is visible. A steel disc on the back of your phone shows through a clear case, and on a bare phone it is simply stuck to the finish.
- It blocks wireless charging where it sits. The plate is a metal barrier over the charging coil, so a Qi pad will either refuse or charge poorly. Position it off-center if your phone charges wirelessly, and accept that this is a genuine compromise.
- It is semi-permanent. Adhesive pads are consumables. Moving the plate to a new phone usually means new pads, and removing it from a phone you are selling wants the protective film that some kits include and others do not.
- It can trap grit. A plate stuck to a bare phone and then slid into a tight case will collect dust at the edges over time.
How to fit the plate so you do not regret it
- Put the plate INSIDE the case rather than on the phone, if the case is rigid enough to hold it flat. The case comes off with the plate when you upgrade and the phone is untouched.
- Use the protective film if the kit includes one. It goes between the adhesive and the surface, and it is the difference between peeling the plate off later and peeling the finish off.
- Position it off the wireless charging coil if you charge wirelessly — usually slightly below center, since most coils sit at the upper-middle of the back.
- Clean the surface with alcohol first and let it dry. Adhesive pads fail on a phone that has been in a pocket, and they fail at exactly the wrong moment.
- Press for thirty seconds and leave it overnight before hanging the phone off it.

Note the row that says none of them. No magnetic plate mount on this page publishes a hold weight, which is worse disclosure than the MagSafe half of the category manages — two MagSafe mounts on this site state 4.4 lb and 4.5 lb. With no figure to compare, judge on plate size: a larger plate presents more steel to the magnet and holds better than a small one.
The alternative worth considering first
If sticking something to your phone bothers you, a clamp mount avoids the whole question. Mechanical arms close on the phone, nothing is adhered, wireless charging is unaffected, and mechanical retention is the most reliable type in a hot cabin. The cost is that it is a two-handed operation and it is bulkier in front of your screen.
For a phone with a wallet case or an unusually thick case, the clamp is often the better answer anyway — and one mount on this site publishes the cradle depth that decides whether a thick case seats.
