This page exists because of a specific, extremely common disappointment: someone buys a magnetic car mount, sticks their phone to it, and the phone slides off. The mount is not defective and the magnets are not weak. The phone simply has nothing magnetic in it.
What went wrong
The magnetic mount market has quietly split in two and the listings do not make it obvious.
One half is MagSafe mounts. These hold a ring of magnets that Apple builds into every iPhone from the 12 onward, and into MagSafe cases. They are elegant because the phone needs no modification — but they only work on hardware that has the ring.
The other half is the older approach: the mount is a magnet, and it ships with thin steel plates you stick to the phone or slide inside the case. The magnet holds the plate. This works with literally any phone, including every Android, every iPhone before the 12, tablets and GPS units.

The one listing in this group that states plainly it does NOT work with MagSafe and does NOT support wireless charging — which, for a buyer whose phone has no magnet ring, is the paragraph they were looking for.
This is how magnetic mounting works for a phone with no MagSafe ring: you stick a thin steel plate to the back of the phone or inside the case, and the mount holds the plate. It is not a downgrade so much as a different mechanism, and it works with literally any phone.
The two adhesive options are the detail worth noticing, and the listing tells you which goes where: the 3M pad is for a hard dashboard only, and the UV static film is for glass because it peels off cleanly. Using the 3M pad on glass, leather or soft-touch plastic is explicitly ruled out.
It also tells you to press the plate down for ten seconds and then leave it twenty-four hours before hanging a phone on it. Almost nobody does, and that is the usual reason a plate lets go in week one.

Four plates is the number that makes a two-pack genuinely useful rather than a spare in a drawer: two phones, two cars, and one plate each in the case plus a spare.
A rotating base on a magnetic mount is worth more than it is on a clamp mount, because with a magnet you can also just rotate the phone on the magnet itself. Having both means you can set the mount angle once and then flip the phone between portrait and landscape freely.
The mini-tablet claim is worth treating carefully. A tablet on a single vent blade is a lot of hanging weight on a thin plastic louver, and no rated hold weight is published.

The only mount in this group that publishes a hold weight — 5 lb — and the only one whose hook is built for the round eyeball vents that defeat every ordinary vent clip.
A published 5 lb rating is rare in this category and it is the reason this one carries the tablet recommendation. A large phone in a case is about half a pound; an iPad mini is about three-quarters. Five pounds is real margin over both.
The hook is the other reason it is here. Round and cross-pattern vents — common in Mercedes and in some Chevrolets — have no blade for a normal clip to grip, and most vent mounts simply cannot be fitted to them. This one rotates a long steel hook into the opening instead.
Note that every device needs a plate, including an iPhone that already has MagSafe. That is the whole premise of this page, but it is worth saying plainly: the magnet in this mount is pulling on the plate, not on your phone.

The vent hook in the box is the right architecture for anyone who drives two different cars. The magnet head and the ring on your phone stay the same and only the attachment changes, so one mount covers a car with a usable dashboard and one without.
The washable gel base is the practical difference from an ordinary suction cup. Suction fails because the pad picks up dust; a gel pad you can rinse and air-dry gets its grip back rather than being thrown away.
The windshield option deserves the same caution it gets everywhere else on this site: several states restrict what may be attached to the glass and where. A vent hook is in the same box, and it removes the question entirely.

What the plate costs you, honestly
- It is visible. A steel disc on the back of your phone shows through a clear case, and on a bare phone it is simply stuck to the finish.
- It blocks wireless charging where it sits. The plate is a metal barrier over the charging coil, so a Qi pad will either refuse or charge poorly. Position it off-center if your phone charges wirelessly, and accept that this is a genuine compromise.
- It is semi-permanent. Adhesive pads are consumables. Moving the plate to a new phone usually means new pads, and removing it from a phone you are selling wants the protective film that some kits include and others do not.
- It can trap grit. A plate stuck to a bare phone and then slid into a tight case will collect dust at the edges over time.
How to fit the plate so you do not regret it
- Put the plate INSIDE the case rather than on the phone, if the case is rigid enough to hold it flat. The case comes off with the plate when you upgrade and the phone is untouched.
- Use the protective film if the kit includes one. It goes between the adhesive and the surface, and it is the difference between peeling the plate off later and peeling the finish off.
- Position it off the wireless charging coil if you charge wirelessly — usually slightly below center, since most coils sit at the upper-middle of the back.
- Clean the surface with alcohol first and let it dry. Adhesive pads fail on a phone that has been in a pocket, and they fail at exactly the wrong moment.
- Press for thirty seconds and leave it overnight before hanging the phone off it.

Note the hold-weight row. Exactly one mount here publishes a figure — 5 lb — which is better than this half of the category usually manages and comfortably past a large phone in a case. For the other three there is no number to compare, so judge on plate size instead: a larger plate presents more steel to the magnet and holds better than a small one.
The alternative worth considering first
If sticking something to your phone bothers you, a clamp mount avoids the whole question. Mechanical arms close on the phone, nothing is adhered, wireless charging is unaffected, and mechanical retention is the most reliable type in a hot cabin. The cost is that it is a two-handed operation and it is bulkier in front of your screen.
For a phone with a wallet case or an unusually thick case, the clamp is often the better answer anyway — and two mounts on this site publish the figure that decides whether a thick case seats: one states a 0.7 inch cradle depth, the other a 1.05 inch maximum phone thickness.
