Cradle depth is the spec nobody publishes and everybody needs. 0.7" clears a normal case; it does not clear a case with a battery pack or a thick wallet on the back.
Measure your phone WITH its case across the widest point. If it is over 3.8" the arms will not close on it, and no amount of "universal" fixes that.
A suction mount on a leather or soft-touch dashboard is a bad idea regardless of how good the cup is. Use the vent clip on those interiors.

Magnet count is a real proxy for holding force but it is not a specification — array geometry matters as much as quantity. Use it to compare within a category, not to compute anything.
The metal hook is the part that fails on cheap vent mounts. A plastic hook flexes with cabin heat and drops the phone; a steel one does not.
Vent mounts put your phone in the airflow. In summer that cools the phone; in winter, hot air on a phone in direct sun is how you get a thermal-throttling warning mid-navigation.

Wallet cases are their own problem
A wallet case is not simply thicker. The card pocket makes the back of the phone non-planar, usually with a step or a bulge on one side. Mounts that grip the sides cope with that; mounts that rely on a flat back resting against a backplate do not, because the phone sits at an angle and only one clamp arm makes proper contact.
One mount on this page names wallet cases explicitly in its listing, which is a signal worth acting on in a category this vague.
The alternative: skip the cradle entirely
If your case is MagSafe, a magnetic mount removes the problem rather than solving it. There is nothing to close, so there is no depth to run out of, and case thickness only matters to the extent that it weakens the magnetic hold. That is why a MagSafe mount appears on this page alongside the clamps — for many people with thick cases it is the better answer.
Check width too, not just thickness
The clamp ranges that do get published run roughly 2.2" to 3.8" and 2.37" to 3.54". A large phone in a rugged case can exceed 3.5", which puts it outside one of those two ranges entirely. Measure across the widest point, case on, before you compare anything else.
