The glove box is the only enclosed, lockable-ish storage in most cars, and it is usually full of things that have been there for years. Here is a short list of what earns its place.
The list
- The owner's manual. It answers the airbag layout question, the tire pressure question and the warning light question, and it is the one document that cannot be replaced by a search on a flat phone.
- Proof of insurance, and registration if your state requires you to carry it — though the visor is a better home for those two specifically.
- A tire pressure gauge. Small, cheap, and the only way to check the thing that most affects how the car drives.
- Spare fuses, if your car did not come with a holder in the fuse box.
- A small torch. Not your phone — a torch that works when the phone is dead.
- A pen and a notepad, or a card, for exchanging details after a bump.
- One charging cable. One. Not four.
- A microfibre cloth for the inside of the windshield.
The two things that should not be in there
The structural fix: a second layer
A glove box is a horizontal surface with a lid, so everything in it sits in one layer and new things slide on top of old ones. A tray creates a second surface, and the practical effect is that the box holds roughly twice as much while staying usable.
Because the lid closes on a fixed clearance, this is one of the few places where a vehicle-specific molded part genuinely beats a universal one — a tray a quarter-inch too tall stops the lid shutting.

Why the visor beats the glove box for documents
At a traffic stop your hands are near the wheel and visible, and reaching across the cabin to a glove box is both slower and less comfortable. A slim visor organizer with a document slot puts the two things you might be asked for within a hand's reach of the wheel. Everything else stays in the glove box.
The annual clear-out
Once a year, empty it completely. Anything you did not use in twelve months and cannot name a scenario for comes out. In most cars that is three cables, a decade of receipts and an expired insurance card, and the box is transformed by removing them rather than by organizing them.
