Two things change in an SUV, and they point in the same direction: there is more room for a bin, and there are more people who need to reach one.
Size up, because you can
A 10 liter bin in a compact car's footwell is a piece of furniture you step around. In an SUV footwell it disappears. If your car generates a road trip's worth of rubbish rather than a commute's, the larger capacities on this page are the ones that stop you emptying it constantly.
But hang it, do not floor it

#1 · The largest capacity here
SUN CUBE Car Trash Can with Lid, 10 L
SUN CUBE
10 liters with a lid and a removable, 100% leak-proof lining — the biggest published capacity on this page and the easiest to actually clean.
A removable liner is the single feature that decides whether a car bin is still in the car in a year. Bins you cannot empty properly get thrown away.
10 liters is about 2.6 gallons — comfortably the largest here. In a small car it is a lot of bin; in an SUV footwell it disappears.
What works
- Largest capacity here
- Lid
- Removable leak-proof liner
- Mesh pockets
What does not
- Large for a compact car
- No published external dimensions
- Lid adds a step to every use
Skip this if
Skip it in a small car. It will occupy footwell you need.

#2 · Vans and long trips
Car Trash Can with Lid and Storage Pockets, 2.6 Gallon
Generic (2.6 gal hanging bin)
2.6 gallons with a lid and storage pockets, sold for vans and trucks — the largest gallon figure on this page.
2.6 gallons is genuinely large for a vehicle. In a van it is right; in a sedan it is a piece of furniture.
Side pockets on a bin are a mixed blessing — useful for wipes, and a place things get forgotten next to garbage.
What works
- Largest gallon capacity here
- Lid
- Extra pockets
What does not
- Too big for small cars
- No published dimensions
- Unbranded
Skip this if
Skip it unless you drive a van or take long trips. In a normal car it is oversized.

#3 · A lidded bin at a sensible size
Femuar Leak Proof Car Trash Can with Lid, 2.25 gal
Femuar
2.25 gallons (8.5 L) with a lid, collapsible and waterproof — the middle of the range here and the one most SUVs should buy.
Collapsible matters if the bin is not always in the car. A rigid bin you have taken out has nowhere to go; this one folds flat.
A lid is the difference between a bin and a bag of smells in warm weather. If you eat in the car at all, buy the lid.
What works
- Lid
- Collapsible
- Published capacity in both units
What does not
- No published dimensions
- Collapsible bins sag when partly full
- SUV-sized
Skip this if
Skip it if the bin never leaves the car — a rigid bin holds its shape better.

#4 · The default car bin
HOTOR Car Trash Can, Leakproof, 2 Gallon
HOTOR
2 gallons, leakproof, with adjustable straps and magnetic snaps — the most-sold shape in this category and a sensible starting point.
Two gallons is more than most cars need weekly and exactly right for a road trip. Under-sizing a car bin is the mistake — a small one overflows and then you have loose trash again.
Leakproof is the specification that matters. A fabric bin without a sealed liner is a smell you will not get out of the car.
Magnetic snaps are for holding the mouth open. They are convenient and they are also the part most likely to stop working.
What works
- Genuinely leakproof liner
- 2 gallons
- Multiple mounting positions
What does not
- No published dimensions
- No lid on this model
- Magnetic snaps weaken over time
Skip this if
Skip it if smell is your problem rather than volume — buy one with a lid.

What a hanging bin needs that a floor bin does not
- Adjustable straps that reach around a large seat back. SUV seats are wider than sedan seats and short straps do not close.
- A lid that stays shut when the bin swings. A hanging bin moves on every corner.
- A leakproof liner, which matters more when the bin is at head height for a child rather than on the floor.
- Enough rigidity that the mouth stays open. A soft bin hanging on straps collapses on itself and stops being usable.

The second bin argument
In a three-row SUV, one bin does not cover the car. A small footwell bin in the front for the driver plus a hanging bin for the second row is a more honest setup than one large bin that only half the occupants can reach. The small 2 liter option on our main trash can page exists for exactly this.
How we picked these
Capacity that suits an SUV, then whether it can hang, then liner and lid. Every figure is the maker's own and cited on the card. We have not used any of these.
Sources
Everything on this page traces back to one of these. Where a figure could not be sourced, the page says so rather than filling the gap.
