Best Truck Under-Seat Storage

The best storage space in a crew cab is the one under the rear seat — and whether a box fits it depends on something most listings never mention.

The short answer

Lift your rear seat cushion and look before you buy anything. A molded box gives you a rigid, lockable-looking space cut to your truck, but it will not fit over a factory subwoofer or molded floor mats — one listing here states that outright and another claims to fit trucks with the audio system. A folding fabric bin fits almost any crew cab, costs a third as much and collapses when you need the seat.

A crew cab has a cavity under the rear seat that is the size of a large suitcase and is, in most trucks, entirely empty. It is out of sight from outside the vehicle, it is dry, and it is the only storage in a pickup that is neither in the bed nor in a passenger's way.

Two completely different products claim it. One is a molded plastic box cut to a specific truck. The other is a fabric bin that folds flat. They cost three times different and they fail in different ways.

Molded box or folding bin

The two product types, on what each publishes
TypeFitsProtects contents?Folds away?
Molded drop-in boxOne truck family, by model yearYes — rigid walls and lid areaNo
Folding fabric binMost full-size crew cabsNo — fabric with a stiffening boardYes

The molded box is the better product if it fits. It uses the cavity's actual shape, it holds tools without them rolling, and it survives a seat being folded onto it. The fabric bin is the better bet if you are not certain, if the seat gets used for passengers, or if you would rather spend thirty dollars than a hundred.

The factory subwoofer is what stops a box fitting

This is the single most useful thing on this page and it appears on exactly one of the five listings. Rough Country states that its box does not fit trucks with factory-molded floor mats or a factory subwoofer, and that the factory storage box has to come out first.

A number of crew cabs put the audio system in precisely the cavity these boxes are designed to fill. That is a physical obstruction, not a fit preference — and the OEDRO listing takes the opposite position, stating that its boxes fit vehicles with or without integrated audio systems.

The seat still has to fold

The failure mode nobody thinks about until it happens: you fill the space, and then the rear seat cushion will not drop back down. One listing here says it plainly — do not overfill the box or the top pockets, so the seat still folds.

That is why the published heights on the one product that states them are worth reading. Its bins are quoted at 5 inches at one end and 7.5 at the other, which is the shape of the cavity: it tapers, and a box that ignores the taper either rattles or holds the seat up.

How we ranked these

  1. Does the listing publish what stops it fitting, not just what it fits?
  2. Does it publish dimensions, so you can check it against the gear you want to stow?
  3. Is the fitment claim specific — truck, cab style and model years — or a family of trucks?
  4. What holds it in place: molded shape, straps, or nothing?
  5. Can the space be given back when the rear seat is needed for people?

None of this is a test. It is five listings read against the same five questions, which is how a thirty-dollar fabric bin ends up ranked above a hundred-dollar molded box on one measure and below it on another.

#1 · The buyer who needs to know what stops it fitting

Rough Country Under Seat Storage for Silverado and Sierra Crew Cab

Rough Country

The only listing in this category that names the three things that will stop a molded box dropping into your truck — factory floor mats, a factory subwoofer, and the factory storage box that has to come out first.

Everything about buying under-seat storage for a crew cab comes down to what is already in that space, and this is the listing that tells you. If your truck has the factory sub, no molded box in this category fits, whatever the others claim.

It is precision-molded to one family of trucks across four model years, which is narrower than the Ford boxes here and correspondingly more likely to sit flush.

No internal dimensions are published, which is the gap — you know it fits the truck, but not what fits in it.

What works

  • Publishes the exclusions that actually decide fitment
  • No drilling and no fasteners — it drops in
  • High-density thermoplastic, stated made in USA
  • Anti-skid surface rather than bare plastic

What does not

  • No published internal dimensions or capacity
  • No compartment count published
  • Narrow model range, four years of one truck family
  • Among the most expensive options here

Skip this if
Skip it if your crew cab has the factory subwoofer or the molded factory floor mats. The listing says so itself, and that is a physical obstruction rather than a fit preference.

#2 · Ford crew cabs, including trucks with the factory audio system

OEDRO Under Seat Storage Box for Ford F-150 SuperCrew, 2-Piece

OEDRO

Two molded boxes rather than one, cut for eleven model years of F-150 and Super Duty, and the only listing here that claims to fit trucks with the integrated audio system.

The two-box arrangement is the practical part. One long tray for recovery gear and a smaller box for the things that get lost in a long tray is a better answer than one cavern with a divider in it.

Eleven model years of F-150 plus five Super Duty variants is a very broad claim for a molded part, and broad claims in this category are where disappointment lives. The compensation is that it is sold by Amazon rather than a single-listing seller, so returning it is straightforward.

It uses screws where the Rough Country box drops in. Five minutes is still five minutes, but it is not a no-fastener install.

What works

  • Two boxes in one purchase rather than a single tray
  • Broadest published vehicle coverage of the molded boxes here
  • Claims compatibility with the integrated audio system trucks
  • Sold and shipped by Amazon, so returns are simple

What does not

  • No internal dimensions or capacity published
  • Its audio-system claim sits directly against Rough Country's subwoofer exclusion
  • Screws required, unlike the drop-in alternative
  • Most expensive option on this page

Skip this if
Skip it if you have not lifted your rear seat cushion yet. A molded box is the least forgiving product here, and the five minutes it takes to look is cheaper than a return.

#3 · A molded box with dividers you can take out

Tuyoung Under Seat Storage Boxes for Ford F-150 and Super Duty

Tuyoung

The same Ford coverage as the OEDRO in ABS rather than PP, with dividers designed to be removed for awkward loads and a warranty term actually stated on the listing.

Removable dividers matter more in a truck than in a car. The whole point of this space is the long awkward object — a recovery strap, a breaker bar, a folding shovel — and a fixed divider is what stops it going in.

ABS is the tougher of the two plastics named on this page, and it is the only listing here that puts a warranty term in writing.

It publishes nothing about the exclusions that the Rough Country listing is explicit about, so the subwoofer question is yours to check.

What works

  • Dividers come out completely for long items
  • ABS rather than PP
  • 12-month warranty stated on the listing
  • Twenty dollars less than the other molded Ford box

What does not

  • No published internal dimensions
  • No exclusions published, including nothing about factory audio
  • No installation method or time stated
  • Single-seller listing rather than Amazon-fulfilled

Skip this if
Skip it if you want a second small box. This is one tray with dividers, where the OEDRO set includes a separate small box, and the small box is the one that stops the little things migrating.

#4 · Knowing exactly how much space you are buying

MIKKUPPA Truck Under Seat Storage, Folding Fabric Bin

MIKKUPPA

A folding fabric bin rather than a molded box, and the only product on this page that publishes its own dimensions — which is what lets you check it against the gear you are trying to stow.

This is the only listing on the page that answers the question buyers actually have: how much fits. Everything else names a truck and leaves the volume to your imagination.

The 5 to 7.5 inch height range is the honest shape of the space. Under-seat cavities taper, which is why a rigid box has to be molded per truck and a fabric bin does not.

A third of the price of the molded boxes, and it folds away when the seat is needed for passengers — which is the other thing a hard box cannot do.

What works

  • Publishes full dimensions for both bins, unique on this page
  • Folds flat when the space is needed for something else
  • Two straps to stop it sliding rather than relying on friction
  • A third of the price of the molded boxes

What does not

  • Fabric will not protect contents from being stood on the way a hard box does
  • The stiffening board is the only thing holding its shape
  • Ford trucks only, by the listing's own claim
  • No stated weight limit for either bin

Skip this if
Skip it if what you are storing needs to survive being crushed. A 600D bin keeps tools tidy and out of sight; it does not protect them from the seat being folded down on top.

#5 · A collapsible bin that is not tied to one truck

GEEDAR Under Seat Storage Truck Tool Box Organizer, 3 Compartment

GEEDAR

A three-compartment nylon bin that claims most full-size crew cabs rather than one model — and the listing is honest that overfilling it stops the seat folding down.

Three compartments in a collapsible bin is the most flexible arrangement here, and collapsible is genuinely useful in a truck that sometimes carries people in the back.

The fitment claim is loose — it names truck families rather than model years, and one of its examples is not a truck at all. Treat it as a bin that probably fits rather than a part cut for your cab.

No published dimensions, which after the MIKKUPPA listing is a noticeable absence in the same product type at the same price.

What works

  • Three compartments rather than one or two
  • Collapses completely when the rear seat is needed
  • Warns you about the overfilling failure mode
  • Not tied to a single truck family

What does not

  • No published dimensions at all
  • Fitment list includes a vehicle that is not a full-size truck
  • Fabric only, with no stiffening board mentioned
  • No fixing straps published, so it relies on the cavity to hold it

Skip this if
Skip it if you want a part that is cut for your truck. This is a universal bin with a generous fitment list, and in a cavity as awkwardly shaped as a crew cab floor, universal means approximately.

Where these numbers came from

We have not handled this product. Here is what we did instead.

What nobody publishes

  • Internal dimensions on any of the three molded boxes. You are told which truck it fits, never how much it holds.
  • A weight limit, on any product here.
  • Whether the box is secure in any meaningful sense. These are hidden, not locked, and no listing claims otherwise.
  • How the box behaves with the seat folded down onto it, which is the load case that matters.
  • Which trucks have the factory subwoofer in that cavity, which is the question the whole category turns on.

This is not the same as under-front-seat storage

Our under-seat organizer roundup covers the slim bags that slide beneath a front seat — a different space, a different shape and a different constraint, which is the clearance between the seat rails and the floor.

The space on this page is the deep cavity behind the rear seat cushion in a crew cab. It is several times larger, it is only found in four-door trucks, and the products that suit it have nothing in common with the front-seat bags beyond the word under.

Sources

Everything on this page traces back to one of these. Where a figure could not be sourced, the page says so rather than filling the gap.

Common questions

Will an under-seat storage box fit my truck?

It depends on what is already in the cavity. Factory-molded floor mats, a factory subwoofer and the small factory storage box all occupy the same space, and one listing here excludes all three by name. Lift the rear seat cushion and look before ordering — it takes a minute.

Are molded boxes or fabric bins better for under a truck seat?

Molded boxes are better if they fit: rigid, shaped to the cavity and able to take the seat folding onto them. Fabric bins fit more trucks, cost about a third as much and fold away when you need the rear seat for passengers. The choice is mostly about how certain you are of the fit.

Can I lock an under-seat storage box?

Not with any product here. These are concealment rather than security — the seat cushion covers them and that is the whole mechanism. No listing on this page claims a lock, and any that did would still be defeated by lifting the cushion.

How much fits in a truck under-seat storage bin?

Only one product here publishes dimensions: a two-compartment bin at 31.5 by 11.8 inches and 5 to 7.5 inches deep, plus a single bin at 16.5 by 11.8 inches. The molded boxes publish which trucks they fit and nothing about capacity.

Does an under-seat box stop the rear seat folding down?

It can, and one listing warns about exactly that — do not overfill the bin or its top pockets. The cavity tapers from about 5 inches to 7.5 inches deep on the one product that publishes the figures, so tall items are the ones that cause the problem.
