A coaster is the two-dollar fix for that, and the category has quietly split into two products that share a name and solve different problems.

Most people searching for a car coaster want the first one and buy it without knowing the second exists. If your actual problem is a toddler and a cup of juice, the disc is the wrong purchase — a flat absorbent stone does nothing about four ounces of liquid.
Why everything is 2.56 inches
Three of the four products here publish a diameter within a tenth of an inch of each other, and that is not a coincidence.
Our cup holder sizing guide puts most car holders between 2.8 and 3.4 inches across the opening, and they taper toward the base. A 2.56-inch disc is small enough to drop past the taper and sit flat on the bottom of nearly any holder, which is exactly what the category has converged on.

The listing tells you twice to measure your cup holder before buying, which is more caution than most of this category shows.

The extra tenth of an inch over the 2.56-inch standard is small but real: a coaster that fills more of the base leaves less exposed plastic for a drip to find.
It is also the thinnest here at 5.8 mm, just under a quarter inch, which is the right direction for anything going into a shallow holder.
The listing describes both a cork base and a rubber non-slip surface. Whichever is underneath, the effect that matters is that the disc does not spin when you lift a cup out.

#4 · Catching spills rather than absorbing them

A silicone liner with a raised rim, not a flat disc — the one design here that catches a whole spilled drink instead of wicking condensation off the bottom of a cup.
This is a different product wearing the same name. A ceramic coaster absorbs the ring of condensation under a cup; this is a cup-shaped liner that holds whatever you spill until you take it out and pour it away.
The dimensions tell you which one you need. At 3.15 inches across and 1.18 inches deep it lines the holder rather than lying in the bottom of it, so it only works if your holder is at least that wide.
For anyone who carries children, coffee or both, containing a spill beats absorbing a ring. For a tidy commuter cup, the ceramic discs are thinner and less obtrusive.

The specification nobody publishes
Absorption. Every ceramic coaster here is sold on soaking up water and not one publishes how much it holds, in any unit. There is no way to rank them on the thing they are for.
So we have ranked them on what is published: diameter, thickness, pack count and whether there is a notch to lift the thing out — which matters more than it sounds, because a wet ceramic disc in the bottom of a deep holder is genuinely hard to get a fingernail under.
Thickness is the overlooked number
A coaster raises every cup by its own height. Two of the products here publish that figure — 0.23 inches on one, 5.8 millimeters on the other, which is about the same — and the rest do not.
In a deep holder it makes no difference. In a shallow one, or in a car with a sliding console lid that closes over the holders, a quarter inch is occasionally the difference between the lid shutting and not.

What a coaster will not fix
A holder that is too big for your cup. A coaster is flat and adds no grip at the sides, so a narrow bottle still rattles around in a wide holder — that is what a cup holder expander or insert is for, and our expander-versus-insert-versus-tray comparison covers which of those three you actually want.
It also will not fix a holder that is already lined. Plenty of cars have a molded rubber mat in the base, and adding a ceramic disc on top of it just raises the cup for no benefit.
How we picked these
Published diameter first, because it is the only thing that decides fit, then published thickness, then pack count, then whether removal is designed for rather than left to your fingernails. We included one silicone liner deliberately: it is a different product solving a different problem, and half the people who search for a car coaster want it instead. Every figure is the maker's own and cited on the product card, and the absorption row says not published on all four because none of them states one. We have not tested any of these.
